Victoria has just made a historic announcement: all public transport is free from Tuesday, 31 March to the end of April 2026. Triggered by a fuel price emergency caused by the escalating Middle East conflict, this is the first time in Victorian history that the state government has suspended Myki fares across the entire network. For migrants and newcomers still finding their feet in Melbourne and regional Victoria, this is a window you simply cannot afford to miss.
What the Victorian Government Has Announced
The Victorian Government declared a temporary cost-of-living emergency measure after global oil prices surged from around $60 per barrel at the start of 2026 to nearly $120 per barrel following disruptions to Middle Eastern shipping routes. Australia, which imports approximately 90% of its refined fuels, was hit hard - with dry pumps reported at multiple service stations across Victoria and prices at the bowser reaching record highs.
To ease pressure on residents and encourage a shift away from private vehicles, the government announced:
| What's Covered | Detail |
|---|---|
| Metropolitan trains | Free, no Myki touch-on required |
| Trams (all routes) | Free, all gates open |
| Metropolitan buses | Free, no Myki required |
| Regional V/Line trains | Free, no Myki required |
| V/Line coaches | Free, but must book a free ticket online to secure a seat |
| Duration | 31 March 2026 - 30 April 2026 (one month) |
If you hold a Myki yearly pass or other long-duration pass: Your pass will be automatically paused during April 2026 and will resume once the free period ends. You will not lose any days from your pass.
Travelling on a V/Line coach (e.g., Ballarat to Melbourne via bus)? You still need to book a free ticket through the PTV website or app to guarantee your seat. V/Line trains, however, require no booking - simply board.
What This Means for Migrants in Victoria
This announcement is particularly meaningful for migrants, international students, and newcomers who are already navigating Melbourne's public transport system while managing tight budgets during the settlement phase.
How Much Can You Save?
| Journey Type | Normal Myki Cost (2026) | April 2026 Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 2-hour fare (Zone 1+2) | $5.70 AUD | $0 |
| Weekday daily cap (Zone 1+2) | $11.40 AUD | $0 |
| 7-day Myki Pass (Zone 1+2) | $57.00 AUD | $0 |
| Melbourne → Geelong (V/Line, daily cap) | $11.40 AUD | $0 |
| Melbourne → Ballarat (V/Line, daily cap) | $11.40 AUD | $0 |
A regular weekday commuter in Melbourne holding a 7-day Myki Pass pays $57.00 per week. Over four weeks, that is a saving of over $228 per person - simply by commuting as normal. All V/Line regional travel is also subject to the daily cap of $11.40, meaning Geelong and Ballarat travellers save the same amount as metro users.
Practical How-To for April 2026
- Do not touch on or touch off with your Myki card at any station, tram stop, or bus stop during April 2026
- Leave ticket gates open - manned station barriers will remain unlocked
- For V/Line coaches only: Book your free ticket via the PTV website before travel
- Myki Money balance is preserved - no charges will be made during this period
- After 30 April 2026: Normal fares resume. Remember to touch on again from 1 May 2026 to avoid fines
Once normal fares resume on 1 May 2026, Authorised Officers will issue infringement notices for passengers who fail to touch on. Do not assume the free period has been extended without checking the official PTV website.
What Does This Mean for Your Visa and Settlement?
While free transport has no direct immigration implications, it is a meaningful cost-of-living benefit for:
- Skilled visa applicants living in Melbourne while awaiting nomination or invitation - reducing day-to-day expenses during an uncertain wait
- International students commuting to university - a temporary but real financial relief
- Partner visa holders exploring regional Victoria for potential 491 regional opportunities - free V/Line trains make regional trips much more accessible this month
- Working Holiday visa holders in Melbourne - maximise savings to extend your travel budget
If you are currently navigating a Victoria skilled visa pathway or exploring your options in regional Victoria under a 491 regional visa, this is also a good time to take day trips to regional centres - Geelong, Ballarat, and Bendigo are all accessible by free V/Line train during April. Understanding regional living firsthand can be invaluable for those considering a regional nomination.

The Bigger Picture: Victoria's Energy Response
The free transport measure sits alongside other government responses to the energy crisis:
- Anti-price gouging laws preventing service stations from excessive fuel markups
- The Servo Saver app - a Victorian-government-backed tool showing cheapest local fuel prices
- The Reserve Bank of Australia has flagged energy-driven inflation as a concern, with interest rate movements possible in Q2 2026
This free transport policy is separate and distinct from the permanent free travel for children under 18 that commenced on 1 January 2026. Adults and seniors must return to paying fares from 1 May 2026.
